REDD+ Environmental and Social Safeguards, agreed in the context of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), are the rules that must be taken into account to ensure respect for the individual and collective rights of local communities, indigenous towns and nationalities, Afro-Ecuadorian peoples and the Montubio People of Ecuador. In addition, these measures aim to increase the potential for benefits resulting from REDD+ activities.
Any stakeholder involved in the implementation of REDD+ actions and measures must comply with environmental and social safeguards. PROAmazonía, implements several strategic actions such as free and informed pre-consultation, strengthening local decision-making spaces, respect for local lifestyles, disposition of key information in digital spaces, amongst others, in order to ensure compliance with safeguards.A
